Litereaaly DE HAAN stands for "The Rooster". That is because a nice little rooster crowed incessantly and rescued some poor, stranded fishermen. Though however ... listen to a more prosaic telling.

The "Hotel Du Coq" (Het Rooster Hotel) was opened at 22nd of July 1988 and that special day De Haan opened its gate for tourism. The idea to construct a brand new, beach area was carefuly planned, and maybe the crawling of the rooster fortified the city to become a lovely beach town! With the beautiful villas all around that has been preserved in the famous "Belle Epoque" style until today ...
