Römer - Römerberg, Frankfurt am Main: 74 reviews and 120 photos

Contrary to popular belief, the R?mer is not Frankfurt?s original town hall. That honour goes to a building that once stood where now the cathedral tower rises towards the heavens.
The more necessary construction of the city fortifications after 1333 and the reparations that had to be paid after the Battle of Kronberg (1389) caused various delays in the building of the new town hall. Finally, in 1405, the council decided to buy two existing houses instead. These two houses, named ?R?mer? and ?Goldener Schwan?, have served as the home of Frankfurt?s town hall ever since.
With the end of imperial coronations in Frankfurt, the bustling city centre began to shift towards the Zeil, leaving the R?merberg on the outside looking in. Only when the R?mer?s facade was redesigned by Max Meckel around 1908 did the old town centre start to regain some public interest.
