Quality of Experience: With a dearth of buttons to press round the ramparts or even real guns to fire, you might expect children to be bored. Happily, the castle has a trump card, an excellent audio presentation on little digital machines which you pick up at the front gate (they are included in the admission price). Spot a number, key it into the machine and you get a lively commentary complete with background sounds of battlefields, flutes and lutes; four and a half hours in all, if you press all the right buttons. The only danger to this is finding yourself being led by the ear instead of the eyes; my 8 and 10-year old nephews were so enthralled by the story of the Crown Jewels they almost forgot to look at them on the way past.
There are regular conventional guided tours as well, and many people prefer these, if only to hear fellow tourists ask intelligent questions such as ?Why did they build the castle so close to the railway station?? On the whole, they?ve succeeded in providing a fascinating visitor experience while maintaining the castle as a serious historical monument. Not a lot of laughs then.
