"Edinburgh Castle - you can't miss it" Edinburgh Castle Tip by wrongbus

Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh: 253 reviews and 449 photos

Scotland?s number one visitor attraction is really several attractions glued together (using a specially developed epoxide resin, in fact, to stop it crumbling to bits). St. Margaret?s Chapel, the Half Moon Battery, the Crown Square would all gather a queue by themselves and with a million tourists a year don?t be surprised if you find yourself in a slow sturdy-shoe shuffle round the ramparts at this time of year.

The key to enjoying the experience is to go early and then head straight to the top of the castle. Work your way down from there; everybody else does it the other way round. Thus, you?ll take in the most compelling and interesting display, Scotland?s Honours, the crown jewels first, before the worst of the bottle-necks forms. Follow this with St Margaret?s Chapel (it can be like the black hole of Calcutta in there on the middle of the day). A gradual descent, taking in the various museums, prisons, the massive Mons Meg canon and a couple of large buttered scones in one of the caf?s should find you at the Mills Mount Battery in time for the firing of the One O?Clock gun which scares the tourists down on Princes Street and signals a good time to retreat for lunch.
