"The Road to Hana !!!" Maui Things to Do Tip by GK2005
Maui Things to Do: 486 reviews and 992 photos
Hana, a town at the eastern end of the island is about 52 miles from the city of Kahului. The drive to Hana from Kahului is an adventure by itself as one gets to drive through lush green and dense rain forests in a very winding road. Drivers have to be extremely careful driving this route as the roads are very curvy and has many blind spots. At times, the roads narrow down to a single lane at spots where one cannot see the on-coming traffic. Its an acceptable practice to honk while driving at these locations as it alerts the drivers coming from the opposite side thereby avoiding collisions.
There are many stops provided on this route for travelers to stop and take in the beauty of the nature. You will not come across any gas stations and so you would need to fill up the gas tank before you leave Kahului. Even though the distance is only about 52 miles, it normally takes about 4 hours to complete that distance one-way. All along, the scenery is spectacular and the drive is definitely worth atleast once.
Many rental car companies do not allow rental cars to be taken past the town of Paia due to the treacherous routing. However, the road all the way to Hana is well paved and so one does not have to worry about going off the road unless one loses concentration totally.
Since one cannot also find any shops along this route, it is very advisable to carry enough bottled water and some snacks along to make sure that one doesnt go totally hungry throughout the entire trip. There are a number of hiking spots along the way. Even though these trails are well marked, care should be taken while treading these trails because it rains frequently, the reason for the lush greenery.
Take your time, drive slowly and take in the beauty of this route. You will never forget it nor would you ever regret it.
