  Lord Nelson
by joanj

In the centre of Trafalgar Square is the statue of Lord Nelson which has caused much controversy as many islanders consider him a British hero rather than a Barbadian one, and want him moved. Others say the statue, which has stood in the square since 1813 (Preceding Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square London, by 17 years) is an important part of the island's heritage and should remain.

On 28th April, l999, the Prime Minister Owen Arthur renamed the square National Heroes Square and suggested that the statue be replaced with one of Errol Barrow, the Father of Independence, fuelling the debate. Since then the Prime Minister has indicated that Nelson may be moved to the Naval Heritage site to be developed at Willougby Fort.
