This, building, on my picture, housed the Catholic Seminary of Kaunas founded in 1864. There was more history than beauty there.

During WWI, until 1918, Germans changed the building into a war hospital.

During first Soviet occupation (1941) buildings of the Seminary were taken away. They were given back after the German occupation in the beginning of the war. German authorities, in contrast to Soviet, didn't fight against catholic church.

During second Soviet occupation (1944 - 1991) the Kaunas seminary remained the only one in the country. But Soviet authorities limited the number of seminarians even to 25. They used to arrest or force to excile many professors and seminarians. They confiscated and destroyed rich library of the seminarium and took away most of the seminary buildings.

It started to change in 70' and finally changed when Lithuania regained independence in early 90'.

A. Jaksto gatve 1, LT-3000 Kaunas.

From northwestern corner of the Town Hall Square (Rotuses aikste) walk westwards, the building on the right.
