"RIO DE JANEIRO : CORCOVADO (HUNCHBACK)" Christ The Redeemer, Corcovado Tip by swesn

  Corcovado Mountain with Christ Redeemer
by swesn

Yes, you have ALSO seen too many pictures and post-cards of the out-stretched arms of the Christ Redeemer and the mountain it perches on (called Corcovado) amongst all the cliche shots of Rio de Janeiro (which I also willingly share with you to death in my Travelogues), haven't you?

Personally, I feel the view from the top of Corcovado is not as spectacular as from the Sugarloaf but you see more, including the famous Maracana, the largest soccer stadium in the world (another TOP TEN LIST for Brazil) and the huge cemetery behind some mountains below. And yes, now you know where the NUMEROUS POST-CARD PHOTOS of the Sugarloaf is taken from. Here.

Again, people recommend visiting the Corcovado during the evening for sunset. At mid-day, it was very smoggy too. But personally, I was afraid of wandering ALONE in unfamiliar places at night in Rio de Janeiro (as the Corcovado was quite a distance from my hostel) due to crimes, I decided against it.

At night, the lighted Christ Redeemer can be seen hovering in the sky against a black background. Very surreal. You can't believe you are in Rio!!
