View of Turckheim through one of the Gates

Three old gates in one of the best preserved medieval city walls in Alsace still give way to the Turckheimer old town. Putting it into the travel guide language, one could say that trespassing one of these thresholds is like a journey back in time. And certainly few things have changed here since the year when a famous battle was fought here between Germans and French. Who else could it be?

Turckheim is the only town in France where a night watchman is still on duty, although his tasks are nowadays more related to folklore and tourism than to its traditional functions. As a tourist, you can join in his daily night round across the town from May to October.

The quality of the Turckheim wines is explained by an old legend: a fantastic dragon-like sea creature arrived one day to town and climbed to the top of the nearby Band Mountain in search of rest. That was a particularly sunny and hot day. So much that the heat made the dragon's skin melt and its blood was spilled around all the surrounding land. The earth fertilized with this blood still produces some of the best grapes in Alsace.
