  Cardrona Road

If you travel during the summer months, I recommend the Cardrona Road, also known as the Crown Range Road. Take the Hwy 6 out of Queenstown towards Cromwell and look for the Cardrona Rd sign on the left.
This is a drive for competant drivers, but is very rewarding for the awesome views from attop the highest public road in New Zealand.
The road links Queenstown to Wanaka, but as I said, is mostly used during summer months. It is possible to drive in from the Wanaka end, most of the way, but the last section winding down the hill is often closed during winter.
You can view more photos on my Crown Range Rd Travelogue.
