This amazing structure, whose construction was started in 1186 and completed in 1250, was a long time in the making! Architecturally, it is a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Maybe this is why it has a strange unbalanced appearance with one of its main towers being topped by a normal turrent while the other has a blue cone!

Legend has it that the fleet of Vasco de Gama, bound for the mysterious oceans of the Far East, had their flags blessed here in 1497.

In our case, it was interesting to note how much cooler it felt inside the high roofed naves of this cathedral as compared to the scorching temperatures outside. These old architects really knew what they were doing!
