The Scoresby family also had deep seafaring traditions in Whitby and a monumnet can be seen in the town centre. Father and son William Scoresby snr and jnr, were legendary Whalers from this area. Plus it was William Scoresby who invented the crows nest on a sailing ship - hence this memorial statue which really looks more like a ber barrel.
