The Jokhang is the spiritual center of Lhasa, the main temple. The Jokhang dates back to the 7th century when Songsten Gampo built it to house the Buddha images his Nepalese wife brought as a wedding gift.
The temple you see today is not the same, but a great building several restorations later.
It is a very important temple for the pilgrims and they walk around it, a route inside and along the main statues. pilgrims don't pay an entrance fee, but you, the tourist have to. We payed 70 yuan in July 2004. For that money we got a small CDrom with some pictures and a short story about the Jokhang, and we were allowed to cut the line to get into the main chapel.
Don't forget to visit the second floor from which you have a nice view on Barkhor Square and the Potala Palace in the distance.

More pictures will be in the travelogue
