If things have not changed, as you walk in the city, you may notice some buildings with bullet holes in them. These are remainings of the doomed uprising of 1956 when Prime Minister Imre Nagy tried to put an end to the one-party state, put economical reforms on the table and make Hungary a neutral state. That didn't go well with the Soviet authorities and in November, Soviet tanks rolled in and brutally suppressed the insurgency despite the call of Mr. Nagy to the international community to intervene (it happened at the same times as the Suez Canal crisis). Hundreds of Hungarians were executed (among them Mr. Nagy), thousands thrown in jail and hundreds of thousands left the country.
The Hungarians never forgot and as a sign of remembrance, never repaired some buildings.
