The juniper or ''Juniperus communis'' is very characteristic for the Dutch heatherfields and blowing sands. The juniper is protected and is threatened to become extinct in the Netherlands within 20 years, if nothing will change. This is what Alterra, a research Institute from Wageningen, the town of the Agricultural University, reported.

The Juniper can reach an age of 80 to 120 years. The last populations of the junipers in Brabant, Gelderland and Drenthe are rather old. There are hardly bushes younger than 60 years old. The most seeds don't have enough germinal force, because there is lack of the right dynamics of the soil.

At Landgoed "De Berenkuil'' in Grolloo you can also find a protected population of old junipers. Luckily there are a lot of young ones here, cherished by the owners of the landgoed.
