"Aya Sofya" Hagia Sophia - Ayia Sofia - Ayasofya Tip by SnoopySue

  Aya Sofya
by SnoopySue

Its name means holy wisdom. Aya Sofya was constructed during Justinian (527-565) on the site of Byzantiums acropolis which had also been the site of an earlier Aya Sofya destroyed in the Nika riots of 532. In 1453 after Mehmet the Conqueror with his army came to the town, Aya Sofya was turned to mosque and remains as such until 1935 when "father" of the modern Turkay Kemal Ataturk proclaimed it a museum.
