Whangamata Beach on a winter's evening.
by worldkiwi

Whangamata is a popular destination for New Zealanders in summer, especially those from Auckland. Many of the houses in Whangamata are actually holiday homes of people who reside elsewhere. This makes Whangamata a sleepy little place in the winter, but by all accounts, it is a hectic, teeming place in summer. What's the draw? Well, it's two magnificent white sandy beaches and the swells that provide excellent surf conditions. If you want to party, it's a good place on New Year's Eve, but if you want to experience nature in more of a zen like state, then avoid it at that time!
Whangamata is located on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula.
