Benares - Dassaswamedh Ghat is the main ghat (or steps to the river) ... and much of Benares comes here in the morning to wash themselves, their clothes ... and pray to Shiva or Krishna. It is an ancient ritual in which the pilgrim (or resident of Benares) shovels water and says the holy name of Ganga. Likely done for 3000 years....

Go before the sun rises ... or you're late. But do not swim across the river (as I did most days) because the river will, by now, have gotten so filthy that you will likely ingest some bacteria that Western medicine has yet to experience ... and fall quite ill. Just go and enjoy the teeming of spirituality (or at least religion) ... and know that most of the people there don't fully understand the meaning of their rituals. Unfortunately.
