  Anglican Cathdral Church of Christ
by sachara

The Anglican Cathedral Church of Christ is adjacent at the slavemarket, so it's a good landmark to find your way to the market. This cathedral is named after the Cathedral of Canterbury. Its foundation stone is laid on Christmas day 1873, the year the slavemarket closed.

The design of the cathedral has a basilican plan with the neo-Gothic form, which was popular at the time in Victorian England. The cathedral has also Arabic details. The spire was added in 1890. The clock was donated by sultan Barghash on condition, that the spire's height did not exceed the House of Wonders.

In the interior of the cathedral you can find reminders of the slave trade and of David Livingstone and British sailors, who died at anti-slaving patrols.

Directions: In the eastern part of Stone Town, just west of Creek Road, south of the Central Market.
