Bonsall Hen Racing, Derbyshire: 1 reviews and 1 photos
This unusual and zany sport is held at the Barley Mow Pub in Bonsall on the First Saturday in August every year.
We were fortunate to be present at this years meeting on 7th August. Attended by
thousands, ok perhaps about a hundred, spectators at the specially created stadium (the pub car park).
Contestants came from around the globe, as far as Huddersfield ! Spectators visited from Australia and New York. Yes I do mean the real Australia and New York USA not some small time village down the road! This is World Championship Racing you know!
Races run for 3 minutes and if no hen has reached the finish line by this time the one who's head is the nearest the line is the winner. It didn't work like that though as everyone ignored the timekeeper, so races ran until everyone got fed up
In between races a folk singer sang a couple of funny songs and I danced with Alan till I felt dizzy
It was good family entertainment, there was food and drink available all day at the Pub and the Crazy Landlord Alan had also laid on an extra bar in the Car Park.
Everyone found it enjoyable and vowed to come back next year.
Next on the agenda is the Landlords walk. Held each bank holiday Monday.
Alan tells you about the interesting places you are passing through and points out places of interest like the house where the family who live there haven't slept in a bed for 60 years, they also have a dog that sleeps in a tree. It's got to be true, Alan told me, and he wouldn't lie, Would he?
