The length of the south-facing coastline is ca. 155 kilometers and stretches about 52 kilometers to the north on the west. There are about 100 sandy attractive beaches washed by the Atlantic Ocean. In the more interior locations, the towns are more relaxed, with luxuriant vegetation, cultivated and wild.
The towns along the coast look back on more then 2000 years on history. Moorish castles, fortresses and Gothic and Baroque cathedrals and churches are only a few architectural highlights here. Also the nature shows its beauty here. Between Lagos and Sagres are the impressive golden rock arches and the caves. The coastline consists of rugged cliffs constantly beaten by waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
