For many people the first association with Salem is the Witch Trials of 1692. But Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864), the great novelist and short story writer is no less important in Salem's history and heritage - he was born here. Among his forefathers was John Hathorne, one of the judges in the witch trials. Nathaniel Hawthorne is best known for The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables. The statue by Bela Pratt proudly commemorates this Salem's greatest son.
