" The Chinese Home in PEM" Salem Things to Do Tip by gosiaPL

  Entrance to the Chinese House
by gosiaPL

The Yin Yu Tang Chinese home is absolutely amazing. It was errected in China, several generations of one family lived in it for 200 years before it was brought to Salem. Reassembling it was a special procedure done by the Chinese in order not to disturb the spirits of the dead from the family. I may be not quite exact saying this but Chinese beliefs played a role in this.
You may admire not only the Feng Shui architecture with the 'sky well' inside the house, but also the ornamentation and some of the family belongings, thus you get a picture of the Chinese lifestyle and traditions. I'd say it's a must to see the house if you're interested in Chinese culture but cannot afford a trip to China ;-) I really enjoyed it.

You visit the house in groups in which the number of people is limited, and you enter at a particular time stated on your ticket. Make sure you're there on time! Taking pictures inside is not allowed (and there are people who make sure you don't!) but if you'd like a pre-view, check the website.

Address: East India Square (must enter PEM)
