Night view of La Alahambra, Granada, Spain

Many of the cities in Spain were built around Moorish castles. In the days of Napolean, many of these were conquered and turned into palaces for royalty. The most recognized Moorish castle, The Alahambra, exists in Granada.

The idea behind these structures is that they were built on hills to provide a military advantage with an exterior structure that is plain and very strong looking. Only those who were granted the permission to enter would be able to enjoy the beauties and treasures that existed within.

Common features to be found in these castles are beautiful gardens, reflecting pools, detailed carvings of arabic prayers, designs of geometric shapes (animals and people were never to be themes in the designs), courtyards, and very ornate ceilings.

Step back in time and experience life in the Moorish castles of Spain.
