THE ISLAND OF RAB - Island of Rab is situated on the nothern Adriatic between the islands of Krk and Pag. The island has been inhabited since the pre-historic times. In the Ancient time it was called Arba.

City of Rab ? The churches and bell towers make Rab an attractive architectural entirety on the Adriatic. The old part of the town in encircled with ramparts (12-13th century) and with the impressive town gate, leading to the park called Komrcar.
The present parish church of St. Mary the Great (the former Cathedral which was canonized by the Pope Alexander III in 1177.) was reconstructed on several occasions during the centuries. In the Upper street is a church of St. Justine (16th century) built in the late Renaissance style which houses now the museum of sacred art. At the end of the Upper Street, near the town?s park is a chapel of St. Christophor (15th century), the protector of the town and the island. In summer, the streets and squares in the city are turned into a huge gallery. Many paintors exhibit their work.

Many myths and stories surround its history. One of them is written in the sculptures near the fountain on the square of St. Christopher. It is the story of the chaste Draga and the passionate Kalifront. Draga, who had promised herself to one of the goddesse, could not give her love to Kalifront, so the goddesses turned her to stone to save her from the temptation.

Other settlements are: Lopar ? the birthplace of sculptor Marin who was, according to the legend, the founder of the Republic of San Marino; Kampor with the Romanesque church of St. Euphemy (13th century); Supetarska Draga, Brbat and Mundanije.
