The Bundesland North Rhine-Westphalia is Europe's industrial engine and one of the most densely populated areas in the continent. The Ruhrgebiet is, as a matter of fact, the biggest conurbation in Germany and the fourth largest urban area in Europe, after London, Paris and Madrid. It is also the cradle of the German industry, having based its prosperity in the coal mining and the steel production. The decline of heavy industries has left a devastated landscape in parts of it, but nowadays this industrial heritage is being revalorised and some sites have even made it to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Historically, the territory of this Bundesland was divided in the former Prussian provinces of Westphalia and the Rhine (the northern part of it) plus the small Free State of Lippe (a former independent Principality).

Cologne, the biggest city, and Düsseldorf, the State capital, stand out as world-class cities which deserve a visit by own rights. In addition to many other lesser places, a few of which you can read about in my Nordrhein-Westfalen page.
