Every town (at least every town with a population exceeding 1000) in southern Moravia has a plague column. The plague decimated Europe for centuries--something like two-thirds of the population in some areas succombed to the plague. No wonder that when it abated in the seventeenth century that people gave thanks for the relief from pestilence.
