  no more plague

Every town (at least every town with a population exceeding 1000) in southern Moravia has a plague column. The plague decimated Europe for centuries--something like two-thirds of the population in some areas succombed to the plague. No wonder that when it abated in the seventeenth century that people gave thanks for the relief from pestilence.

If you saw the burghers of the neighboring town constructing a column of thanks--wouldn't you strive to build a column of even greater beauty (thinking that the next time maybe your town would be spared, while the next town over with the rudimentary column would bear the brunt of the next wrath of god).
