Bakong is one of the earliest Angkorian-style temples, having been built in the 9th century by King Indravarman I. It is also the most impressive member of the Roluos Group, sitting at the center of the first Khmer capital of Hariharalaya. Bakong stands 15 meters tall and is 650x850 meters at the outer wall. Bakong is the first grand structure built in the temple-mountain style, setting the basis for the great temples of later eras, such as Angkor Wat. The temple displays a very early use of stone rather than brick, and some of the carvings, particularly on the outer towers, are in good shape.
