If you have seen the movie Tomb Raider, then you will remember the scene where Lara Croft is wandering through a complex of jungle covered ruins. This scene was filmed at Ta Prohm, which is actually a 12th century Buddhist monastery built during the reign of King Jayavarman VII. Although much more modest in scale and design than Angkor Wat or Bayon, Ta Prohm is probably the most exotic and adventurous of the Angkor ruins, due to the fact that much of it remains unrestored and overgrown with massive trees, their tentacle-like roots covering the ancient stone walls. It gives you a good idea of what the first French explorers to find the ruins of Angkor must have experienced.
