The boulder field at Gloppedalsura is an amazing sight and if you’re travelling from Stavanger to Sirdal, it’s worth turning aside for a couple of minutes to see. The scree was formed during the last ice age when receding ice plucked and distributed boulders into the valley but what boulders! Some of the blocks are the size of trucks or even houses. Piled on top of one another, it gives you an idea of how powerful the forces of nature can be. It’s a truly awesome sight. The picture I've posted doen't really do it justice. Our children enjoy scrambling over the rocks whenever we go there but it's a wee bit dangerous so we keep a close eye on them!

Gloppedalsura was the site of a major battle during WWII. A contingent of 250 Norwegians kept two battalions of Germans at bay and it’s easy to see why it was so difficult to dislodge the defenders. A small plaque on a rock at the viewing point commemorates the battle.

There is also, apparently, a fake stone somewhere in the boulder field. Somebody has removed one of the stones, cast it in bronze, repainted it to look exactly like the original then placed the bronze version back in the place where the original came from. The fake is apparently still there so the next time our family visit Gloppedalsura, I’m offering the children 500 kroner for finding it!
