Meryem, Tarik, and Bouchaib at Marrakech ExpressO
by deecat

While Allan and I were on our way from Libertyville to Chicago on Sunday Morning (July, 2004), I read the Chicago Tribune paper and the magazine section that accompanies it. In the July 25, 2004, edition on page nine of the magazine under the section called In The Loop, there was an interesting article about Bouchaib Khribech from Morocco who came to America in 1990 when he was 23-years old. It was such a great article, that I read it outloud to Allan.
Bouchaib, affectionately called "Bouch", started working at The Billy Goat on Hubbard Street after being in Chicago for only ten days. After meeting Bouch, I understand why so many customers at Billy Goat's liked him so much. He made friends with media personalities and met both Presidents Clinton and Bush One.
Bouch's mother, Zohra Chafki, as well as his 22-year-old sister Meryem and 23-year old brother Tarik, now live in Chicago and work with Bouch. The entire family transformed a former Internet cafe into what is now called Marrakech ExpressO. He uses the14000-square-foot space as a lovely Moroccan Coffee House and Cafe. They personally did all the painting, plumbing, purchasing, and advertising to get it ready for the Grand Opening the second week of July, 2004. Now, they personally do the cooking, waiting on people, and advertising to make their dream a successful reality.
In addition, Bouch still works at the Billy Goat seven days a week! He says that he likes hard work and that he enjoys life's challenges.
We were so impressed with the article that we made it a point to drop in for a visit and to try the coffee and a dessert. Like everyone else, we were impressed with all three (Bouch, Meryem, and Tarik) of their spectacular smiles. They are genuinely friendly, efficient, and still professional. It was quite busy when we visited (late afternoon on a Sunday), and it was a mixture of city and suburban people.

Favorite Dish: I had a huge, hot, quite excellent Cappuccino, and Tarik offered Allan a special Coffee Treat from Morocco, which was much smaller, stronger, but also delicious. Allan & I shared a chocolate cake with wonderful fudge icing and cream filling.
Besides coffee and dessert, they serve Moroccan Teas and Regular Tea, Breakfast Treats, smoothies & juices, soup, sandwiches & dinner specials such as Steak and Chicken dishes. His mother Zohra is famous for her special Moroccan Crepes. We saw several customers order it, and it certainly looked delicious.
Bouch stopped by and introduced himself, and I asked if I could take his and his siblings' photograph and write up his new venture on Virtual He was thrilled. That very morning he had been interviewed on WGN Chicago Radio.

Give Marrakech ExpressO on North Damen Avenue a try; you will smile and know that the American Dream can become a reality for those who work hard.
