"very offensive - offering the left hand" Bali Local Custom Tip by corsakti

In Bali (and possibly other eastern cultures) the right hand is considered 'clean' while the left is considered 'dirty. This is beyond symbolism....its a part of the daily life of all Balinese people. The natives often dont' use eating utensils but instead eat with their hand...only the right hand. This hand used for eating is also used for other 'clean' activities while the left hand is used for more 'dirty' activities like touching animals or 'cleaning' after using the bathroom. So when you offer your hand to shake in greeting it always has to be the right. There are no left-handed people in Bali. Any child displaying these tendences from a young age is quickly trained out of it.
