"Trg Republike-Square of Republic" Republic square - Trg Republike Tip by prleprle

  trg Republike, Belgrade, Serbia
by prleprle

This square is heart of the whole City. The zone encompassed by present day Republic Square was in the past an empty space in front of the Istanbul gate (Stambol kapija) and uninhabited until 1835. When the Stambol kapija was torn down, a lot of construction material became available. It was used to construct many buildings in the zone, including theNational Theatre (Narodno pozoriste, on the right side of the photo), built in 1869. Just across the square is the National Museum(Narodni muzej, on the left side of the photo) founded in 1844.
On the centre of the square is famous sculpture of Prince Mihailo. The monument concept was focused on the idea of liberation of Serbia from the Turks. On the postament bears the inscription in golden letters: "To Prince Mihailo M. ObrenoviŠ III - grateful Serbia". The monument made by Enrico Pazzio, a master sculptor from Florence, was unveiled in 1882.
