"Getting to and away (Boat)" Laos Transportation Tip by aqazi

There are two methods of getting to and away from LP by boat. One is the slow boat option which cost very little and takes two days. During the night the boat moors up and you have to put yoursepf up in a local guesthouse. Lots of people reckon this is the best part of their trip to Laos hmmmm. If you can afford it and can't see yourself sitting on a boat for two day then the other option is the fast boat. It leaves from just outside LP or CK if you are coming the other way. Anyway these speddboats are pocket rockets. There have a been a few fatalities but you now have to where motor cycle helmets and a life vest. However there are never enough to go round so make sure you get one. Also they overload the boats so be careful. I had a helmet most of the way until some old woman took it. take sime tissue to plug your ears as the noise is a killer. Its also uncomfortable as you have to sit in the floor crossed legged for the journey. Anyway its cheaper than flying, you still get to see life up and down the river and you complete the journey in around eight hours (it stops every couple of hours for the loo or meals). Our boat ran out of fuel towards the end so we were stranded in the middle of the river for a while which was funny. Also try and get the boat as early as possible (its on a first come first served basis, as if you arrive too late at the border you'll miss connections to Chang Rai, though the ChangMai Jeep will usually wait for the slow boat to arrive.
