If you find yourself in Edmonton and need a wilderness escape, head for Elk Island National Park.

It is described as an "island of nature surrounded by a landscape of human activity". It is an oasis for moose, deer, coyote, bison and the rare Trumpeter Swan.

There are over 90 kms of hiking trails, I personally had a very close encounter with a very large moose on one of the hikes. I also came alongside a large bison while (thankfully) within the safety of our vehicle. My nephews especially enjoyed the Living Waters Boardwalk, which is also wheelchair accessible. Here you can observe many small water creatures at close hand.

Directions: 35 km east of Edmonton on Hwy 16
