We would have liked to visit Ibarra, the white-stoned old colonial town which is now the provincial capital, but time rules and we had to go directly to Otavalo.

This quiet town is one of the main tourist destinations in the country for its market is considered among the biggest indigenous markets in the whole of America.. The market is particularly lively on Saturdays, but is held every day. You can find here handycrafts from the whole of the country, although the speciality of the area are the textiles.

While the handycraft, held on a large square next to the city center, catters mainly for tourists, there is also a large food market behind the main square. This place is full of local flavour and is visited mainly by indigenous ladies dressed in their colourful and fine attire.

Directions: In a holy Valley between Father Imbaura and Mother Cotocachi.
