  Tor Cross Memorial
by freya_heaven

Tor Cross has a tragic recent history. This is the village taken over by the Americans during the Second World War. The huge stretch of pebbly beach Slapton Sands was used in training for the D Day landings.

During practice landings Operation Tiger on April 28th 1944, over 640 American service men were killed by a passing German Torpedo boat when their landing boats were hit. The sea here can be very trecherous & deep, which are other factors for the great loss of life.

The tank has been a memorial here for a good few years now & there are always poppies & flowers laid here. It is the norm to hear American accents in the season at the memorial tank.
