For over 500 years, Krakow was the capital before Warsaw. Unlike many other Polish cities it managed to escapes the mass destruction that occurred during the Second World War. It is a listed UNESCO World Heritage site.

When the Second World Warcommenced the city had 70,000 Jews living in it. However, during the war there was the silent, mass departure of Jews who were never to be seen again.

After the war a huge steelworks was built in Nowa Huta. This steelworks is the major source of pollution within the city. When you look closely at the historic buildings you can see the layers of dirt from this polution. In recent years, however, a major effort has been made to clean up the city to make it more attractive to the influx of visitors that it receives.
