"Wairakei Geothermal Power Plant." New Zealand Off The Beaten Path Tip by worldkiwi
New Zealand Off The Beaten Path: 233 reviews and 269 photos
The Wairakei Geothermal Power Plant is a spectacular tangle of gleaming steel pipes and billowing clouds of steam, about 10km north of Taupo, in the central North Island. You can drive into the valley and view the expanse of the power plant from a hill. There is an information centre at the entrance, but it doesn't open very early!! This plant supplies about 6% of New Zealand's electricity.
