The Royal Palace of the Borbons, today known as the Royal Palace or the Palacio de Oriente (Palace of Orient), stands on the site of the original Arab fortress and separated from the Almudena Cathedral by only a stone-paved area. The palace surrounds a large central courtyard and has towers crowning the four corners.

Philip V commissioned Sacchetti, an Italian architect, with its construction. It was decorated by renowned 18th century European artists. Its armoury is considered to be one of the most important in the world. The Palace has an immaculate appearance and the gardens called "El Campo del Moro" are beautiful, especially in bloom.
