What is the Barley Mow?
It’s a restaurant (a pub serving food) a night out and certainly a must see activity!
On the wall outside the pub is a notice telling you when the next meeting will be for the Derbyshire UFO society!
Inside the pub it is very cosy. It has only one room with a low-beamed ceiling, from which there are a collection of artefacts that Alan the landlord and his wife Ann must have collected since they have had the pub. (I daren’t ask him where they got them all from or we would still be there now. for Alan likes to talk and tell a tale.
When we arrived there it was late afternoon. In front of the fireplace, which has, a wood burning stove (very inviting in the winter I suspect) was a stage made out of beer crates and covered with a piece of fabric. Alan was at the other end of the room near the bar sorting out his keyboard ready for that evenings entertainment. He stopped as soon as we arrived served us with drinks and then for the next hour proceeded to tell about Bonsal being the Worlds number one hot spot for UFOs and The World Championship Hen Races, which of course are held at the Barley Mow, where else! 7th August this year.
He told us about the live entertainment each weekend and proceeded to pull down blinds turn off lights and move things around to give us the atmosphere of that evening’s event.
Before we left he very kindly gave us his recipe for “How to make spaghetti Bolognaise on a one burner gas stove, in a wok, while staying in the Highlands of Scotland” If you visit the web site you can also get his recipe for Yak Risotto another culinary delight.
I hope you get the general idea of what to expect if you visit this Pub. Alan is a Gem.
He would put a smile on the most miserable face.
To add to this, lunch today was delightful. Although we would still go back if it was garbage.
Alan and The Barley Mow are also featured in the No. 1 best selling novel "Pastures Nouveaux" by Wendy Holden.
Its no wonder he gets visitors from all over the world.
“ See you there!”
Favorite Dish: I Tried the Cheese Pie, Fries and Baked beans. Delicious.
Steak Pie was even better.
Mick had the Roast lamb, with a selection of vegetables, which he also enjoyed. On his second visit he had the gammon which was thick and tender.
