"Le Morne Brabant." Mauritius Favorite Tip by luiggi

Mauritius General: 104 reviews and 192 photos

Favorite thing: For many decades, during the 18th and early 19th centuries, Le Morne Brabant was a refuge for maroon slaves in Mauritius. It is a site which has now entered the popular perceptions as one of slave resistance and marronage, which was a sanctuary for marooned slaves during the 1700?s and early 1800?s. There is a popular myth that slaves committed collective suicide by throwing themselves off the mountain top after the abolition of slavery being in ignorance of the new state of affairs.
