  West Edmonton Mall

Edmonton is the capital city of Alberta, like Calgary, it also owes its prosperity to oil.

It is home to Wayne Gretzky's Stanley Cup winning Edmonton Oilers as well as that shopping monstrosity, West Edmonton Mall. Here you will find, in addition to the shops, an indoor roller coaster, a huge waterpark and full scale replica of Columbus' Santa Maria, pictured here. It's a good place to pass a rainy or cold winter day.

Edmonton also has an extensive network of biking trails along the meandering North Saskatchewan River and a broad range of museums, galleries, theatres, and festivals. Jasper lies not far to the west, and a lesser known National Park, Elk Island lies nearby to the east.

Directions: 3.5 hr drive north of Calgary on Hwy 2 and 4 hrs east of Jasper on Hwy 16
