  Aksum, Northern Stelae Park
by sachara

Aksum is one of the most important attractions of Ethiopia. There are stelae, inscriptions, underground tombs and ruins of palaces. Still 98% of historical Aksum is unexcavated.

In the past the town was part of the Aksumite Kingdom and nowadays it is, as a Unesco Wold Heritage Site, one of the most spectacular ancient sites in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Northern Stelae Park is the largest stelae field in Aksum and contains about 120 stelae. The stele near the entrance (see picture), named King Ezana's stele of 24 M is the biggest standing stele. Some of the stelae imitate multistoreyed buildings with little windows and doors.

For more information have a look at my Aksum page.

Directions: Aksum is in the north of Ethiopia, not far from the border with Eritrea.
The Northern Stelae park lies at the north east site of the town.
