It's the oldest art museum in Finland. There has been permanent exhibition maintained since 1863. It governs over 18,200 works of art.

The building has been completed in 1887 and it was designed by Theodor Höijer. It was one of the most expensive buildings in Helsinki at the time.

The building was completely restored and partly modernized in 1991.
