  Ruin part of the castle

The castle in Heidelberg is something you can't miss; it is just a few steps above the old town and is definitely worth a visit. You can either go by car or by foot. I strongly recommend the second option; the pathway up to the castle consists mostly of stairs, built between a couple of lovely houses. It also allows you to have an interesting view on the old town below.

The castle itself has a very interesting history. Its construction started around 1300 and ended about 400 years later, which explains the heterogeneity of the architecture. It was attacked 2 times by the Frenches during the 17th century, and was abandoned in ruins by the princes.
