Massive line of taxis at a red light

Taxis are the best way to get to and from the airport, but are a mixed blessing within the city. The air conditioning can be a real relief, but if you take a taxi during rush hour you will be in for a long and expensive ride.

I took taxis between the airport and Sukumvit 3 times. The first time, I caught a hotel taxi at the Nana Hotel and paid 400 Baht (US $10) including tolls for the 20 minute ride. The second time, I got a taxi at the airport and agreed to pay 300 Baht (US$ 7.50) for the same ride, again including tolls and the airport fee. The final time, I got a taxi on the street in Sukumvit and told him to run the meter and I would pay tolls -- the bill was only 220 Baht + 40 Baht tolls for a total of 260 Baht (US$7.00).

Lessons Learned: always have the taxi run the meter, and never take a hotel taxi.

BTW, a bus from the airport to Sukumvit is only 100 Baht, but you can end up waiting as long as 30 minutes for a bus to arrive, plus the ride can take 45 minutes to one hour depending on traffic.
