In 1329 Robert the Bruce died. His body was buried at Dunfermline and his heart was taken on the crusades, by his request, by the Black Douglas. Just before the Black Douglas was killed in Moorish Spain he hurled the heart at the enemy. The heart was recovered and buried at Melrose Abbey under the direction of King David II (the Bruce's son).
In 1996 during excavations at the Abbey...a small casket was found that contained a heart. The heart was moved to Edinburgh until June of 1998 when it was returned and buried at Melrose Abbey on June 24th. The burial coincided with the Bruce's victory at Bannockburn in 1314.
Excellent Story and exciting to see.
