  Panorama Raclawicka in Wroclaw
by magor65

Panoramic paintings were very popular in the 19th century. Today Wroclaw Panorama Raclawicka is the only example of this kind in Poland and probably one of the few in Europe. This large painting ( 15mx144m) is displayed on the walls of rotunda building with visitors being in the centre. Due to special artistic methods ( light, props) you have the illusion of participating in the scene. ( Of course now in the times of computers it may seem funny, but you must remember that it was created in the 19th century. The authors were two Polish painters: Jan Styka and Wojciech Kossak helped by a few others. The painting shows the Battle of Raclawice (1794) in which Polish troops defeated the Russians.
Panorama Raclawicka was first opened in 1894 in Lvov. It was extremely popular attracting crowds of tourists. After the second world war the painting was brought to Wroclaw but it had to wait till 1985 for being exhibited.
Today, like once in Lvov, it attracts many tourists.
