It is easy to visit to Bang-pa In on the same day as Ayuthaya as they are very close together. I took a tour which included a boat ride down the Chao Phraya, but you can do it on your own, either by renting a car or hiring a car & driver for the day. There are public buses and I imagine you could take taxis between the 2.

In any case you are visiting the Thai "Versailles" -- the summer palace of kings. You will find buildings in various styles, beautiful gardens and whimsical topiary. Ironically the only Thai-style edifice is this temple in the middle of the artificial lake!
